A Wolf's Bane by Sherrie Henry

Can a human and a werewolf overcome obvious obstacles to be together? Romy and Kai have been hiding their affair from Kai’s clan; it’s not only that Romy is human, but she’s also much older than Kai. Will Kai’s obligation to his clan and tradition tear them apart?

Kai, the eldest and only son and heir to the family’s clan, has fallen for the forbidden, Romy, a human. His father has plans for the clan that doesn’t involve Kai mating a human; these plans drive them apart. But can they ignore their feelings and buck tradition? Will Kai’s decision lead to his death?

Excerpt

Kai pulled her into a tight hug. He tried to ignore the way his skin was crawling – he hated the way he felt before he changed. “I don’t want to live without you.”

Romy held onto him, clutching his shirt, her tears staining it. “Compared to you, I don’t have much longer to live. Maybe 40, 50 years at the most, and you … your kind live for a couple hundred. We’d have to say good-bye eventually. Maybe it’s better to do it now.” Romy knew that her voice wasn’t very convincing, but she tried to be brave and hold back the tears as much she could.

Kai swallowed, burying his nose in her hair. He took in her unique scent…the scent he would go to his grave craving. “I will follow you to the next life. We never really talked about it, but … Romy, I love you. I consider you my mate. Mates die together.”

His words took away any bravery that Romy had left. She felt the tears flow openly from her eyes. “But I’m not your mate. I can never be. You need …” Romy took in a shuddering breath. “You need to honor your father and produce an heir. Your clan needs you; they will need you long after I’m gone.”

“I don’t care what they need,” Kai whispered in her ear.

“I know. That’s what makes you so special.” Romy pulled away so she could look directly into his eyes. “I just ask one thing.”

“Anything. Anything in the universe.”

“Change here. Show me your wolf form.”

Kai’s eyes went wide. “Romy … I … I don’t turn into a wolf, exactly. I don’t look … natural.”

“You are beautiful to me no matter what form you take. Give me this one last night. Show me.”

Kai nodded, but there was panic in his eyes. “If I agree, I have to stay here until morning. I can’t be on the streets.”

“I know. I’m not afraid. Show me that part of you that you’ve never shared with another human before.”

“I won’t be able to talk. It would just be us staring at each other.”

“I don’t need words. I need you. Please … one last night. Protect me.”

Kai couldn’t refuse her. Even though Romy lived in a very safe neighborhood, the animal instinct within him would protect his mate if she asked. “Okay. I will change here. I will show you the other part of me.”

Romy stepped back, wiping away the tears that had fallen from her eyes. She looked up at the clock. “It’s almost moonrise. What do you need?” She closed the blinds and dimmed the lights.

“Nothing really. I just need to take my clothes off…unless I want to rip them to shreds.”

“Allow me?” Romy stood in front of him and slowly unbuttoned his shirt. Kai remained still, silently noting that this moment would be extremely erotic if he wasn’t about to literally crawl out of his skin. She tossed his shirt on the couch, then kneeled down to his feet, helping him step out of his shoes and socks. Her shaking hands went to his belt next, sliding off his jeans, then his underwear.

“What’s next?”

Kai was having trouble concentrating. He tried to find his voice. Already he could feel bones crack as they started to lengthen in places and shorten in others. “Nothing … it’s starting. I … love you.”

He let his head fall back. A snarl came from his throat as his eyes turned black. Fine black hair sprouted all over his body, his nose elongated, his canines erupted. His heels separated from his feet, drawing upwards toward his knees, forcing him on his tiptoes, his palms lengthening, his nails turning to claws. Then it was over. He looked over at Romy, expecting to see horror in her eyes. To his surprise, she came to stand right in front of him, resting her hands on his mutated face.

“You are so beautiful. Why did you think I’d be frightened? I’m more concerned that it was painful for you.”

Kai shook his head, to tell her that it wasn’t as painful as it looked. He began to nuzzle her neck, but she jumped. He started to back away.

Romy grabbed at him. “No you don’t! Your nose is cold and wet. It’s just not something I’m used to feeling on my neck.” She smiled at him. It was a genuine smile, even with the tear tracks on her face. He tentatively moved toward her and let his tongue lick her face, tasting the salty tears.

“Come here, sit next to me.” Romy sat down on the couch, drawing her legs up underneath her. Kai ambled forward, unsteady on his legs so soon after the change. He crawled up on the couch and laid his head in her lap. She started to run her fingers through his fur, trying to comfort him. No other had been able to do to this to him. Whenever he changed, he was surrounded by other weres.  He knew that he would cherish this perfect moment for the rest of his living days.

They lay together on the couch, surrounded by their love for one another. When bedtime came around, they nestled in her bed, with his large form wrapped around her, protecting her just like he promised.

“Anne of Cleves: Henry’s Luckiest Wife” and “Catherine Howard: Henry’s Fifth Failure” by D. LAWRENCE

ANNE OF CLEVES

It is winter 1539. King Henry VIII is galloping through the night to Rochester to meet a young woman. Just arrived in England from Germany, Anne of Cleves is destined to become his fourth wife. He has never met her before. He has only seen her portrait – the portrait of a sweet, demure and innocent young woman. The impatient and lovesick king must see her before their marriage. But this rushed and unplanned rendezvous will shock them and the country both. It will also lead to some completely unexpected and fatal results.

In D. Lawrence-Young’s well-researched novel, we learn of the strong passions and the deadly politics when the romantic plans of a frustrated Tudor king go badly wrong.

CATHERINE HOWARD

This historical novel has it all: sex and romance, violence and war, infidelity and intrigue.

Catherine Howard, the Duke of Norfolk’s niece, is raised in the very free atmosphere of her grandmother’s palace. Here she becomes aware of her own sexuality and the exciting effect she has on the men at court around her. She is also an unknowing part of her uncle’s devious plan to obtain more influence with the king - he pushes her onto the newly-divorced and lovesick King Henry VIII who is looking for a fifth wife.

Meanwhile, John Butcher has become a guard in the dreaded Tower of London. He guards the king, witnesses the executions of Anne Boleyn and Thomas More and takes part in the fighting in Ireland. However, when he returns to London, his meeting with Catherine Howard, the king’s fifth queen, produces unexpected and dramatic results.

In D. Lawrence-Young’s second Tudor novel we learn how Catherine Howard’s passionate nature mixed with the murky, deadly politics of the Tudor court and a furious king produce a classic story of passionate love, disappointment and revenge on a royal scale.

AUTHOR BIO

D. Lawrence-Young takes the often pompous and frequently silly “Shakespeare Authorship Controversy” and turns it into a fast-paced page-turning detective story. All the nooks and crannies of rival candidates and claims are traversed in interesting locations and often funny encounters. The SAC has got under the Shakespeare-loving and teaching David Young’s skin and he has turned this irritant into a pleasure to read and from which there is much to learn.

MAVERICK TOUCH by ASHLEY NEMER presentedby The Art of Safkhet

The Joys of Maverick!

It is such a great pleasure to bring the Maverick Touch series to life. You have no idea how wonderful it is to have a set of characters that do all the work for you. Nadia and Carlisle have many more tales to tell but this one was a lot of fun to write. It took a total of 22 days (27 if you count the few days I took off) to complete the first draft of the novel. It was my very first successful NaNoWriMo! And let me tell you that was no easy feat.
Last year I tried writing the first novel, Maverick Touch The Cat in the 30 days but alas I got sick and it took seven weeks to complete. I am so pleased that this year I made it!
What I love about the Maverick Touch series is that each book, while in a series, is going to be a stand-alone novel. As much as I love my Blood Series it is far too complicated to build each book on-top of one another like I had made it. Another little nugget about the Maverick series is it will always be a clean and quirky novel. I wanted a novel that my dad could be proud of. One that I knew he would be able to read and say, “This is my Daughter!”
I had no idea what a struggle it would be to keep it clean! Because I’m not just talking about sexual content and adult language. I’m also talking about the violence level. It is hard to have a murder mystery series with very little gore! At least to me. But It is proving to be a success.
This series will always be just a feel good afternoon read. It is meant to be light, easy and fun. I know that when I read the novel I am left smiling. Because Nadia and Mr. A just make you smile. Everything about them is enjoying.
And this time we start diving into Nadia’s sister a bit too. I am not sure how many novels are going to come to pass with the Mavericks but as many as the characters want. The next journey will be about Anabella, Nadia’s sister. I will write her novel during NaNoWriMo November2014. I know a few of my fans are upset that it will be a full year in between each novel but that’s part of the fun for me. I have a year to come up with the where and why of the story and then when Nov 1 hits bamm out of the gate running with drama!
Sometimes when I look at these characters and the depth of the stories I find myself shocked at how far I have come from the girl who couldn’t form two sentences without a grammatical mistake. That was me in school. English and Ashley did not melt together, at all. Like oil and water.
But somehow I am finding a way to make it all work and for that I am eternally grateful to the Grammar Gods for keeping me aligned.
I hope that you all check out the Maverick Touch series. Book one, The Cat, is always free on any e-reader. I want you guys to love my work so please go out, read The Cat and then go pick up The Highway. It is only 2.99 on e-books and 10 in print.
Let me know if Mr. A becomes your favorite bad boy. He already has quite a little fan base following him.

When the series begins Sydney Rye is named Joy Humbolt. She does not like people telling her what to do, so it comes as no surprise that she was just fired from her last job. When she buys Charlene Miller's dog-walking business on Manhattan's exclusive upper east side, it seems like the perfect fit: Quiet environment, minimal contact with people.

But then one of her clients turns up dead, and Charlene disappears. Rumors say Charlene was having an affair with the victim--and of course, everyone assumes Joy must know where she is. Joy begins to look into the crime, first out of curiosity then out of anger when there is another murder and threats start to come her way.

When police detective Mulberry is assigned to the case, Joy finds a kindred spirit--cynical and none-too-fond of the human race. As they dig deep into the secrets of Manhattan's elite, they not only get closer to the killer but also to a point of no return. One last murder sends Joy Humbolt hurtling over the edge. Her only chance of survival is to become Sydney Rye.

Excerpt One:

I do.
Very few words, if any, have the power to change your life as exponentially as those two.
Whether you’re already planning the wedding or just considering his proposal, know that you are in the process of making the most important decision of your life. Sound daunting? A little scary, even? Good. That means you’re truly considering what it will mean to be married to this man. You’re thinking about what’s at stake in choosing him, forsaking all others, to be your companion, mate and lover through your one, precious life.
You know those movies in which the hero wakes up one day and finds he’s the only man left on Earth? Then, miraculously, he finds the one woman left on the planet living in some bombed-out apartment building? And, lucky for him, through all the dirt and torn clothing he can see she’s the hottest chick ever? And initially they hate each other but realize they really love each other and decide to begin their task of rebuilding the human race?
Okay, maybe getting married isn’t that dramatic but it’s not far from it. Either you choose the right partner to help you successfully navigate this strange, new world called Marriage or you choose the wrong one and begin your descent into unhappy-marriage hell.
With your “I do”, you will mark the start of the rest of your life. Your new husband will be the last man you’ll ever have a first date with, the last man you ever french kiss, the last man you’ll ever share a bed with. This man will be the father of your children and that’s an irreversible choice. You’ll slog through the everyday routine that is life and, if you’re lucky, that life will also be peppered with joy and moments of passion that make you both sigh and remember the good old days of coat closet sex.
You will know this man, if all goes well, better than you have ever known another person. You will share his fears, his moments of glory and his bathroom. You’ll also become expert at reading his moods, accepting his limitations and soothing his demons. Yes, he has demons. We all do. And if you haven’t seen your man’s yet, you will. Make no mistake.
No matter how you slice it, marriage is a gamble. Statistics vary but somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 to 50 percent of first marriages end in divorce. Let’s put it this way: Nearly half of you reading this book will get divorced. And if the numbers are that high for people who make the difficult decision to split, how many couples stay married and miserable? My clinical guesstimate is that you have about a 25 percent chance of ending up in happy marriage. Sweating, yet?

From Goodreads.....

Christoph Fischer
"Suicide Song (Songs)" by Wand Hartzenberg is a most beautiful and thoughtful short story about a young man's last moments on earth. The author zooms in from afar with mesmerizing observations about the night sky and a dark memory before homing in on that moment, throughout using great metaphors and scene setting.
The writing is atmospheric and bittersweet while the setting is described in excellent detail. It is the perfect close up of the surrounding of the moment to come. The scene was so cap...more
