1. The Secret in
the Old Clock by Carolyn Keene – My first Nancy Drew Mystery book. I
remember copying the format and wrote my first mystery short story at age ten—Mystery at Diver’s Point.
2. The Mistress
of Mellyn by Victoria Holt – My first Gothic Romance and the beginning of
my obsession with the seaside of Cornwall, England. I was also reading at the
same time period: Phyllis A. Whitney, Dorothy Eden, Daphne Du Maurier, and Mary
Stewart.
3. To Kill a
Mockingbird by Harper Lee – No explanation needed, except I read the book
after I saw the movie, and even though I fell in love with Gregory Peck, the
book was even more powerful than the movie.
4. Jane Eyre
by Charlotte Bronte – the ultimate Gothic Romance and once again… the moors of
England along with a great twist I hadn’t guessed. During the same time period,
I read all the Wuthering Heights by
her Charlotte’s sister and all the Jane Austen novels.
5. And Then
There Were None by Agatha Christie – Like all my favorite Christies, I’ve
read it more than once.
6. A is for
Alibi by Sue Grafton – my first foray into female detective novels. When
reading Sue Grafton’s books, I became Kinsey Millhone. I loved the way she ate
junk food, and I especially loved the converted garage she lived in, her one
black dress, and her loft bedroom with a window looking at the stars.
8. The Guernsey Potato Pie Society – A wonderful WWII
story of loss and redemption.
9. A Great
Reckoning by Louise Penny – I’ve read all of Louise Penny’s books. I love
the character of Inspector Gamache and the cozy town of Three Pines. This
particular book was personally autographed by Ms. Penny and the reason I chose
it, knowing it would be impossible to choose just one favorite.
10. All the Light we Cannot See by Anthony Doer –
Another WWII novel that touched my heart.
*As a sidenote: I devour Cozy Mystery books. There too
many great authors to mention. I read them in paperback, on my Paperwhite
Kindle, and also listen to them on Audiobook. Most times I have three cozies
going at once!*
