MILAN ~ A WEDDING STORY by SIMI K. RAO

About the Book:

Milan (A Wedding Story)

When a daughter turns marriageable age, what should a responsible father do? Easy--wed her to the most suitable boy who comes knocking on the door. Jai Bharadwaj, Mili's father and owner of The Serenity Tea Estate in the idyllic Nilgiris would've probably liked to do the same, but being who he was, he had to ask her first. What would she say?

A chat with author Amy Duboff author of The Cadicle Series

Amy has always loved science fiction--books, movies, shows and games. After devouring some of the classics like Dune and Ender's Game in her tween years, she began writing short stories. In the ensuing years, Amy attended the Vancouver School of Arts and Academics in Vancouver, Washington, where she studied creative writing. She eventually became a Psychology major at Portland State University, but also pursued a minor in Professional Writing. After graduating, she stumbled into a career as a proposal manager. Amy currently lives in Portland, Oregon, with her husband. When she's not writing, she enjoys travel, wine tasting, binge-watching TV series, and playing epic strategy board games.

What is your book about?

The Cadicle series is a multi-generational space opera epic, built around the premise that humans are a divergent race of Tarans--and a fully established galactic empire exists just out of our sight on Earth. Some Tarans have telekinetic abilities, and the only sanctioned place to gain training for those abilities is with the Tararian Selective Service (TSS)--which happens to be headquartered in Earth's moon.

The first book in the series, "Architects of Destiny," is a prequel. Cris is a teenager born into a High Dynasty on Tararia. He has telekinetic abilities, but his parents want him to ignore the abilities and focus on the family company instead. In fact, thanks to the Priesthood, the use of such abilities is all but banned. So, Cris leaves home to go find himself. Along the way, he gets recruited by the TSS.

The second book, "Veil of Reality," takes place about twenty years later. Cris is a senior officer in the TSS, and he has a fourteen-year-old son, Wil. Wil is the main character of the series. He's extremely gifted and has grown up within the TSS. He's kidnapped by a mysterious race on the outskirts of the galaxy, the Bakzen. Cris goes on a rescue mission to find Wil and discovers a whole mess of conspiracies between the TSS, Priesthood, and the rest of Taran civilization. War is coming, and Wil will be at the center of it.

The rest of the series follows the main characters as they face the toll of war, and ultimately need to address the broken systems in the Taran government.

What authors inspire or influence your work?

Dune (Frank Herbert) and Ender’s Game (Orson Scott Card) are the two biggest influences for my Cadicle series. At its core, I think of my series as a combination of those two, with some twists. There’s also some Wheel of Time (Robert Jordan) in there, too.

I have always seen inspiration in everything around me--from personal life experiences to the worlds crafted by others--and those things have all become a part of my own creation. After years of taking in little ideas here and there, I felt the world growing in my head was finally ready to be experienced by others. I write now to share that vision. It is the culmination of all that has inspired me throughout my life.

Favorite snack when writing.

Those who know me are well aware of my addiction to parmesan flavored Goldfish crackers. A bag of those with some orange-mango juice and I’m good to go. And, I’m not above adding a splash of my favorite 360 brand orange-flavored vodka to the juice when the words aren’t quite flowing :-).

Once a character is fully developed do you set them free or do they still dance around your mind?

The characters in my story have been living in my head for so long that I don’t think they’ll ever go away. When I have a quiet moment, I tend to go to that world. I think I’ll carry them with me for the rest of my life.

Who gets to read your drafts before they're published?

My husband is usually the first to look over a draft. I also have a small group of beta readers--some are friends, and others are people I specifically recruited for that purpose. I also have my editing team for proofing.

The third book in the Cadicle series, “Bonds of Resolve,” is the first where I’m sending out ARCs to bloggers for review. I’m looking forward to releasing the book with reviews!

Share the biggest hurdles in the marketing process.
Does “marketing” count as an answer? Hah! No, but really, getting one’s name out there as a new author is extremely difficult. There are millions of books to choose from--how does an author make theirs stand out?
Finding ways to get in front of prospective readers has been a big challenge. “Self-publishing” has a bad connotation, unfortunately, and getting people to take a self-published work seriously is difficult. Combing through blogger lists, at least half of them won’t accept a self-published book--in fact, one person actually said, “I won’t read self-published books, as I value good writing.” Yikes.
To have my books can stand alongside those from traditional publishers, I’ve done the following:
Invest in custom cover art. Covers make a big difference when a reader is scrolling through pages of search results on sites like Amazon. Without an engaging cover and title, the likelihood to “click” to read the blurb is far lower. I invested in custom illustrations to help my books look polished and intriguing.
Published under “BDL Press.” One of the best pieces of advice I saw was to make a self-published book not look like one. Using a publishing house pseudonym can help with that--like using a pen name.
Build a social following. Rather than focusing on Facebook and Twitter where there’s a lot of advertising, I wanted readers to focus on the content of my books. So, I joined several online writing communities where I can interact with readers and writers who are interested in my genre. Many of these people have gone on to purchase my books and help spread the word through reviews.
Run a promo. I’m in the midst of launching my first right promo now, and I hope it will pay off. For four days, I’m setting the first book to Free and the second to $0.99. I hope that will kickstart some sales and help build momentum. I know not everyone who downloads a free book will read it, but I hope some will and become fans of the series.

Where can readers find you and your book(s) online?

WAR, PEACE and Poetry CINDY J. SMITH

FREEDOM FIGHTERS
                                                        © Cindy J. Smith

They come with their slogans
To entice our youth
"You must sign up and fight
For freedom and truth"
Once papers are signed
Send them off to boot camp
Where they'll be trained
And their morals revamped
Going to free the world
Of all the evil around
"Gooks", "Japs", "Krauts" and "Rag-heads"
Their numbers abound
With pride and honed skills
They board planes and ships
Sure their purpose is right
No doubt passes their lips
In silence they debark
On beaches, meadows, deserts
Their hearts racing fast
Their minds at full alert
Face now their first battle
Bullets whiz, bombs explode
Keep fighting and fighting
Bodies working in "auto-mode"
Crossfire diminishes
Silence and smoke fill the air
Then cries of the wounded
Shrieks from everywhere
Dawn's light show the truth
Of what they have all done
Village now a wasteland
Hell that can't be undone
See homes in shatters, fires galore
Bodies torn asunder, rivers of blood
Of both friends and enemies
Strewn across the thick mud
Eyes that once sparkled
With the glimmer of pride
Now filled with the horror
Caused ignorance and pride
Witnesses now to war
See how they were misled
"Gooks", "Japs", "Krauts" and "Rag-heads"
Are like them and bleed red
All the wounded and dead
Were once filled with hope
Deceived by politicians
Missed the carrot on the rope
War is destruction
Only causing death and pain
To think it will bring peace
Is truly insane

PEACE

Their future just starting

They are called off to war
Told that freedom and peace
Are worth dying for

In their dress uniforms
Buttons shiny and bright
Family, friends they are proud
So it must be all right

But major destruction
Is all that's in store
When Pride and greed unite
Countries declare war

Bullets start flying
Maim all in their path
There is no escape
From their vengeful wrath

The whining of bombs
Raining down from the sky
Mix with the terror and fear
Of the survivors' cries

Gathering up the wounded
In a town now rubble
Eye witness to carnage
Need help on the double

So many lay dead
Friends and enemies alike
No good thing can come
From this unexpected strike

Their camouflage clothes
Covered now in blood
And their nice shiny boots
Scraped and covered in mud

Horrors of war witnessed
Are burnt deep in their souls
They know that their hearts
Will never be whole

How much blood must be spilled
Precious innocence lost
Before we finally admit
Peace shouldn't have this high cost

About the poet in her own words....
I grew up in the country of Upstate New York and now reside in the boonies of Midwestern Indiana. I am a coffee-addicted truck driver (as if there was any other kind). I have written poetry all my life. The topics and poems just come into my head. I try to write in the first person for most of them. I do this as people are more apt to relate to something when they are not feeling like they are the target. Some of my poems are true, either for me or for someone I know. I believe in magic and that life is worth living. I hope that my words will touch every reader in some way. I want everyone to open their eyes and really see what is before them.

EXCERPT FROM THE FIRST LIFE OF VIKRAM ROY

I walk past Churchgate station, against the human tide surging towards the trains. Lawyers, engineers, blue-collar workers, newly minted MBAs on their first job. All united by the lifeline of this city, by its local trains. Not the most elegant means of transport, but it's the fastest way to get around the city and it's the only way to avoid the traffic jams. Just as long as you don't mind having your nose jammed into the throat of the man ahead. But I am not getting on the trains today.
I enter the small café and order a cup of their extra-special chai. Then, I settle down to wait for him. I hope Vishal really does show up this time. The last time, he said he'd come and never did. But, I can be patient. Persistent too.
I order another cup of chai and finish that too.
The light is fading outside. Around me the tables fill up with early diners. The smell of food wafts through the air and my stomach rumbles.
Where is he?
Another chai arrives. I let this one cool. I am all chaied out. I don't touch this cup.
He arrives suddenly.
Vishal walks in, stops at the entrance and looks around before spotting me. As he walks towards me, the college girls at the other tables follow his progress. Crew-cut hair, a cut-off T-shirt showing off the tattoo snaking up his arm, and jeans torn at the knees. He looks down at me, dark eyes shadowed, before dropping down in the chair opposite. Behind him, the headlights of the slow-moving traffic bounce off the windows. The honking of the cars pours between us, filling the silence.
"Tea?" I ask, and without waiting for an answer, I look around for the waiter, who materialises at his elbow, placing a glass filled with the milky brown liquid.
"How—?" I ask, then shut up.
This is his local café. His hostel is just around the corner. He must eat all his meals here.
The waiter appears, placing a plate of food in front of him.
"It's dinner time." Vishal shrugs and is about to dig in. He pauses, asks, "Do you—?"
I'm already shaking my head. "No. Mum's waiting for dinner."
The words are out before I can stop myself. Damn. Fuck. As if the contrast in our situations isn't stark enough, I had to go point that out, right?
Vishal doesn't say anything. He digs into the food. Eats.
I swig the water from the glass, wishing for something stronger. Still, it's good to see him eat. He has a healthy appetite. He seems strong, vital. Alive. A rush of brotherly love surges up, taking me by surprise. I look away. Tilting the glass of water, I drain it off to the last drop. Before I can ask for a refill, the same waiter appears and tops me up.
"Quick service," I comment.
"They know me here," Vishal says, voice neutral. His plate wiped clean, he drains his own glass of water and leans back with a sigh. "Why did you want to meet, Vikram?" he asks.
I grasp my fingers around the glass of water.
What does he see? A brother? An enemy? The favoured son? I lean forward, steeple my palms together so they form a pyramid on the table.
"Vishal, come home," I say.
There's stunned surprise on his face, then he bursts out laughing. A quick short burst—harsh. Loud enough for people at the nearby tables to look up at us.
"Losing your touch, you are, Bro. You sound like one of those newspaper ads for runaways." He makes a rectangle of his hands, miming an ad. "All is forgiven. Come home."
"Forgive us, Vishal," I say, keeping my breathing even. Calm. I pour my heart into the words. Can he see that I mean it? I want to tell him how sorry I am. But I don't want to sound like I am pleading. Though, of course, that is exactly what I am doing.
"It's too late, Vikram." His voice is even, steady.
"It's not. It isn't," I insist.
Our eyes clash. An uncertain look flashes across his, making him look more like the teenager he still is, rather than the grown-up, street-smart man he's pretending to be.
"It's not too late. Never too late," I say.
"Look. Vik. Your mother doesn't want me there. I was never a part of that home."
"She's not all that bad, Vishal. It's just … you remind her of Dad's affairs, all those other women in his life."
He doesn't seem surprised when I refer to Dad's flings in the plural. It's not something we've ever spoken about. But I know that he knows too.
"I know she didn't make you very welcome. But she also didn't disown you, throw you out to starve, did she?" I plead.
"Dad wouldn't have allowed that," he says.
But his voice isn't very convinced. He doesn't meet my gaze now, instead looking across to the crowd on the next table. He pulls out his packet of cigarettes and lights one. The waiter brings him an ashtray immediately. He doesn't offer me one and I don’t ask either.
I press my point. "She did give you a roof over your head all these years."
"Then, at the first opportunity, moved me to a hostel." He says it without malice, blowing out smoke. He looks at the cigarette.
"It's one of the finest colleges in the city. A good hostel." I defend her.
"My point. Exactly." He looks up and smiles a little. Just one side of his lips lift. It's not a happy smile. Cynical. "Which is why I say, let it go. It's fine where I am. I've found my place here. I never did belong at your home."
He gets to his feet and I follow him.
"The bill?" I look around for the waiter.
"It's on my tab."
Seeing the look on my face, he smiles. This one reaches his eyes, lights up his face. He looks mischievous, almost happy.
"I can pay for your chai, Vik. It won't put me on the street."
Relieved, I follow him out of the café onto the footpath. "Do you need anything else, Vishal?"
"Money, you mean?" He says it without heat. "No. Dad's made sure my hostel is all paid for, till I graduate. And I get a monthly allowance."
"He planned it all out, didn't he?" So, Dad's thought this one all the way through.
"Maybe he had to," Vishal agrees.
"Did he know what was coming?" I wonder aloud. He prepared for the worst, he did.
"I think he sensed … something."
There it is, that look in his eyes again. He knows something, Vishal does. Something he's not telling me. I ask quickly, "What do you mean? Tell me."
A shutter falls over his eyes, his features freeze. "I have to go, Vikram. People are waiting for me." He turns to leave.
"Wait, Vishal." I stop him, and when he looks over his shoulder, I ask, "Your mother. Where is she?" All these years and I've never dared ask him about his mum.
There's something like puzzlement, then wariness, on his face.
He frowns, then says, "She's gone."
"What do you mean?" I ask.
But he continues walking, not replying. Hands deep in pockets, his shoulders hunched and his face thrust forward so his chin almost touches his chest.
"Is she dead?" My voice follows him, but he doesn't turn back.
Is she alive? Is that what he meant?
It'll be a few more years before I get the answers to my questions.

It would be too easy. There was something very wrong about this, about a newly made vampire walking the streets of downtown Spokane as if he were on a leisurely stroll. The change had to have been recent. Blood soaked his light-blue shirt, leaving a large stain over his chest and the left side of his body. If I’d had to guess, he’d been changed within the last few hours. His skin hadn’t turned the pale milky white associated with the undead yet. Before I could think further, he struck. In a split second, his once jerky movements morphed into a flash of speed as he launched himself at me. I twisted out of the way but was too slow to avoid his second strike. He grabbed me by the back of the neck, flinging me across the road like a rag doll. My body collided with a parking meter, the near frozen metal splitting my cheek and knocking the air from my lungs. I exhaled a vicious curse before drawing my twin daggers from the thigh sheath beneath my dress and jumping to my feet. My dress rode up, but I couldn’t have cared less at the moment. I was just grateful that despite the dress, I’d managed to wear the blades. Warm blood seeped from my cheek and my ribs ached with my movements. He charged again, and this time I was ready. I allowed my attacker to get close, his hands brushing my shoulders right before I sank my first blade into the soft flesh of his stomach. My second pierced his chest, but I missed the heart. With my blades still imbedded, he squeezed my shoulder, the pain explosive. I heard a distinct pop before my left arm went limp. Shit! My brain took a backseat as adrenaline flowed through my muscles. I kicked out with my left foot, the heel in my shoe sinking into his calf. His leg buckled under the assault and I pulled free, losing my heel in the process but retaining one of my blades. The other remained in his chest. My left arm hung loose at my side. My right lifted and was ready with my dagger, dark-red blood dripping from its point. His eyes glowed an even deeper red, fangs descending farther to cover his bottom lip. You might as well put those back, mister. You won’t be making a meal out of me. Hot blood surged through my veins. I hastily kicked off my remaining heel, ignoring the discomfort of the snow and gravel beneath my feet. I needed to move faster. When he struck again, I threw myself to the left, my right arm coming up and slashing his throat in a swift motion. A gurgling sound emanated from his throat, but I knew it wouldn’t last. He would begin healing almost immediately. Damn vampire. I needed to disable him somehow without killing him. My fire was calling to me and I shoved it down with everything I had. I could not light him on fire. I was determined to find out who had turned him and why he’d been set loose. I moved to deliver another blow, a deep stab to his stomach once more, but just as I moved to strike, a deep growl echoed through the streets. Another predator making itself known. Like an idiot, I turned, and the moment of distraction cost me as I felt the vampire sink his teeth into my raised forearm. A scream escaped me, and then the growl turned into a thundering roar. I watched in suspended silence as Declan tackled the fledging vampire, bringing him to the ground, the crunch of bone loud to my ears as his body hit the pavement. He’d taken a mouthful of my flesh with him when he’d gone down, and blood flowed freely from the wound, staining the ground red. I tried without success to staunch the bleeding with my left hand but couldn’t get my arm to corporate. Before I could stop him, Declan brought his hands to the vampire’s neck and, in one quick movement, snapped it. The sound made me cringe. He rose from the body and kicked it once. He grunted in satisfaction when the body didn’t respond. As though a switch had been flicked, I snapped out of my daze, fury and so much frustration rising to the surface. “What the hell did you just do?” I yelled at him. Don’t light the Alpha on fire. Don’t light the Alpha on fire. I repeated the mantra over and over in my head. It would not bode well for me to attack him right now. No matter how much he deserved it. Declan looked taken aback for a moment. “I saved your life,” he said. Urgh. Moron! “No, you didn’t. You ruined it. I cannot believe you just snapped his neck like that, without any thought.” My temperature rose and I had to take a calming breath to contain myself. It didn’t help much. “Why would I think about it? He had his fangs buried in your arm. I’d expect a little gratitude here.” I stormed past him and crouched beside the vampire, tearing my blade from his chest. I wiped the blade on the edge of my dress before sheathing it. It was already ruined so a little more blood couldn't hurt it. I needed something else to focus on aside from Declan’s stupidity or I was going to lose what little control I had. I skimmed my hands over the now cold body, checking the pockets of his shirt and pants to find anything that may provide me with some sort of clue. “What are you doing?” Declan asked, obviously annoyed. Join the club, buddy. I was pretty damn annoyed myself. “I’m looking for information,” I bit out. “It would have been much easier to just question the vampire but no, you had to go and snap his neck and be all ‘I am tiger, hear me roar.’” I threw my hands in the air in frustration. He snarled beside me. “I saved your life.” “No. You interfered. I’m a pyrokinetic. Don’t you think if I’d wanted him dead, I’d have lit his ass on fire as soon as he got close? I wasn’t trying to kill him. I was trying to disable him, and then you had to come out here all hot-headed and kill him.” postdivider
