Daemones ex Machina

Cyberpunk/Urban Fantasy Fiction

Release Date: July 23rd, 2025

Publisher: Acorn Publishing

If you make a deal with the Devil, don’t forget to read the fine print.

Three operatives find themselves on the run after a corporate sabotage job goes awry. Now, their predatory employer, a heavyweight weapons-tech firm, wants its elite A-team dead at all costs.  Jon is a smooth-talking charmer. Friedrich is a hacker prodigy. And Guion is the ice-cold tactician who keeps them all in line.

Backs against the wall, the men strike separate infernal pacts to stay alive. They vanish into the urban badlands of New York’s Five Hives, vowing to lie low and figure out why they’ve become targets. Meanwhile, Jon suspects there’s an insidious evil possessing his friends, and he wonders if they all got more than they bargained for.

Amid an escalating war between local gangs and the firm’s private shock troops, the fugitives uncover a conspiracy that threatens to destroy everyone they know and love. But can they stop the destruction before their inner demons seize control?

About the Author

At the age of four, Russell Anders started telling stories, often interrupting his mother during bedtime reading to ask, “Then what happened?” She always answered, “You tell me,” and his imagination conjured fantastical tales of dragons and dinosaurs.

He gravitated toward a career as a technical writer and writing coach for software companies. He also briefly served as a columnist for Dragon Magazine. One of his favorite hobbies includes tabletop role playing, especially as the game master. And yes, he's as cruel to the characters in his games as he is to the characters in his books; his players love him for it.

Russel lives with the constant canine companionship of whip-smart but goofy Sigurd, an English Mastiff (the best breed ever).

Daemones ex Machina is his debut novel.

Join Tom and his colleagues in the feel-good Detective Tom Robertson series, which combines police procedural crime fiction and murder mystery with compelling characters and a thread of humour.

Wrath of Revenge

Detective Tom Robertson Book 1

by A.G. Winkworth

Genre: Crime Thriller, Murder Mystery

Detective Sergeant Tom Robertson has left the comfort of rural Scotland for the Met.

He doesn't need to be here. His business career earned him enough money to retire at thirty and spend his days playing golf. But he has chosen to challenge himself in a big city a long way from home. He thinks he might be able to make a difference. Not through arrogance, but perhaps a naïve belief that one police officer can change the lives of those in danger or trouble. He needs to test his own resolve, and prove he isn't too gentle a soul for this sort of work.

Tom hasn't found where he belongs yet. He knows his mission isn't as a teacher, a doctor or a priest. Could it be here, in London, at Merran Road Police Station?

When a blast from the past rocks the present

The discovery of human bones in a wooded area by a golf course gives DS Tom Robertson his first case since moving to the Met. Who is the victim? Why was he buried there? And how much can Tom and his new DCI, John Walters, find out from their initial enquiries before they are off the case and the Murder Investigation Team take over?

Two further murders narrow down the search for the killer. MIT has a suspect with motive, means and opportunity. But Tom thinks they should be looking in a different direction. Can he close the case while staying out of danger?

Deadly Justice

Detective Tom Robertson Book 2

A punishment is not the end, merely the beginning.

When a young boy opens the boot of an abandoned car, he hasn’t just found one body, but lifted the lid on the chilling operation of a serial killer. And now his own family is in danger. DS Tom Robertson is drafted into the Murder Investigation Team and the evidence points one way, but is it the right way? For while the team follows the trail backwards to find previous victims, the killer is looking forwards. Can Tom hunt him down before he strikes again?

Detective Sergeant Tom Robertson has joined the Met, to challenge himself in a new environment and try to make a difference.

But someone else wants to make a difference too, and he’s playing from his own rulebook. One where the law and sanctity of life mean nothing.

Join Tom and his colleagues for Deadly Justice, the second full-length instalment in the feel-good Detective Tom Robertson series, combining police procedural crime fiction and murder mystery with compelling characters and a thread of humour.

Will innocent victims get caught in the crossfire? Can MIT hunt down the killers and restore calm, or will gang warfare take over?

DS Tom Robertson’s career in the Met has started with a bang. Now he returns to the Hessop for the second time in a week. Can his knowledge of the local youngsters give him a crucial advantage in keeping them safe and bringing an end to the killing spree? But he has to be ready to adapt. For against this volatile backdrop, events take a different turn and the investigation uncovers other crimes linked to the serial killer who is already in custody.

I have always loved reading crime fiction, from the novels of Agatha Christie and PD James, to Ian Rankin and Peter Lovesey, among many others. This genre has so many talented authors, a topic which I will explore more in my newsletters.

I started writing the Tom Robertson series in 2020, but quickly realised I had so much to learn about writing, crime, and then actually producing the book. I am indebted to all those who have helped me along the way.

The first book I wrote, Darkness to Light, has been reworked, and will probably be re-titled too, to become book 4 in this series. I also wrote books 5 and 6 as I honed my craft. I felt readers would benefit from Tom’s backstory, so I wrote Deadly Justice, now book 2, Murder at the Museum, and book 3, Dangerous Reprisals. Then I decided the series needed a new start, so I wrote the first book, Wrath of Revenge.

As a new independent author, I really feedback and support from you, the reader. I hope you enjoy the adventures of Tom and his colleagues and I continue to read as the series develops. Please contact me with your thoughts so far, and leave a review on Amazon.

Illusionist

A Sean McPherson Novel, Book 5

Mystery/Thriller/Private Investigator

Date Published: 04-15-2025

Publisher: SparkPress

A contemporary crime thriller perfect for Louise Penny and Robert Dugoni fans, Illusionist presents PI McPherson with an impossible dilemma: kill an author at a writing retreat in the Pacific Northwest, or let a college student die.

When an illusionist arrives at Pines & Quill, one of the retreat’s owners vanishes—right in front of witnesses who see nothing. Meanwhile, crime boss Georgio Gambino tightens his grip, blackmailing a writer into murder and framing Sean McPherson. His threat is clear: obey, or your daughter dies.

As McPherson investigates, he uncovers a brewing power struggle—Carmine Fiore, Gambino’s second-in-command, is staging a coup. While Gambino’s network traffics drugs, weapons, and humans, Fiore manipulates the Sureños gang, planting evidence to shift blame.

Desperate to turn the tide, McPherson seeks a dangerous alliance. But when deception is the game, only illusion can outmaneuver the truth. Enlisting the retreat’s eclectic writers—including a NASCAR driver, a triathlete, a house-flipping architect, and a magician with secrets of her own—McPherson sets the stage for the ultimate trick: survival.

About the Author

A blend of Dr. Doolittle, Nanny McPhee, and a type-A Buddhist, Laurie Buchanan is an active listener, observer of details, payer of attention, reader and writer of books, kindness enthusiast, red licorice aficionado, and lover of the Oxford comma.

As a novelist, photographer, and voracious reader, she never travels without three essentials—a laptop, a camera, and a book.

Growing up, she dreamed of being a magician, an international spy, and a mad scientist. There’s still time!

Her writing studio is the hayloft of a historic carriage house in the Pacific Northwest, where creativity thrives. Her husband, Len, a private pilot, and Henry, their not-so-standard Standard Poodle, join her on daily walks. She always carries a camera because sometimes, the best word choice is a picture.

A journey that left an indelible imprint on her was a 20-day, 211-mile trek across the majestic landscapes of Scotland. She, her husband, and their son hiked from the North Sea to the Atlantic Ocean, with the pinnacle being the climb of Ben Nevis at the midpoint of their adventure, the highest point in the British Isles.

"My writing goal is simple: to leave you wanting more." —Laurie Buchanan

Zane Carter and his sons, eleven-year-old Ty and thirteen-year-old Joseph, venture one hundred miles into the Idaho wilderness with only a knife and the knowledge of their Nez Perce ancestors. Danger awaits at every deadfall and lurks in every snowy shadow as the boys hunt, fish, make weapons, and build shelter, learning to survive, taking only what they need from the land, and leaving no trace.

During their eighteen-day journey, Zane’s determination to fulfill a promise to his grandfather, an Indigenous warrior who exemplified the tenets of a wise and spiritual existence, is thwarted by a fatal encounter that transports Zane into an ancient realm as he straddles the thin line between life and death.

He wonders what has become of his boys. Have they learned enough patience, resourcefulness, and courage to complete this rite of passage? Will they make it out of the wildlands alive? Or will the unforgiving forces of the natural world take them too far from home to ever return?

Will There Be Wine? by Whitney Cubbison Genre: Romantic Comedy

If you love European settings, wine, romance, female friendships, laughter, heartbreak, redemption, and a bit of spice, these are the books for you!

Will There Be Wine?

by Whitney Cubbison

Genre: Romantic Comedy

Austen Keller was living her dream. She landed a career-defining job which moved her and her husband to Paris. Swoon! Shortly thereafter, she was divorced. Thud. This wasn’t the plan. Yet there she was—pushing 40 and starting over.

A decade after she’d last been single, Austen enters the dating scene playing by a new set of rules in a different language, culture, and lingerie standards. She experiences every type of miserable first date imaginable and lives to tell the tales of Pierre the Mansplainer, Simon the Snoozer, Emile the Over-Sharer, Guillaume of the Gym Shorts, and many more. On most dates, she struggles to get past one glass of Bordeaux without wanting to bolt. Even worse, no one chases after her when she runs. It doesn’t take long for her to realize that whoever said French men were romantic deserves a swift kick in the pants.

A rewarding and high-powered career. Check!
Fabulous female friendships. Nailed it!
True love. Umm?

Austen continues to ask herself: Is “having it all” too much to ask?

A genuine and tragically hilarious novel about an ex-pat woman's journey of self-discovery through a string of disastrous dates, relationships forged in a deep cultural divide, world travels, and wine. A lot of wine.

Will There Be Love?

by Whitney Cubbison

Genre: Romantic Drama

A propulsive exploration of romantic and platonic love, commitment, shared history, betrayal and personal reckoning.

To celebrate her fortieth birthday, Ophelia and her husband Gianluca gather an unlikely group of eight friends and lovers – some old, some new, some false, some true – for a long weekend in Ibiza. However, the idyllic villa setting may be the only thing holding together a complicated tangle of friendship, love, and betrayal.

Among the guests is Ophelia’s old university flame, Matt, and his new girlfriend, Austen. While Matt finds himself falling in love, Austen is holding back, carefully protecting her heart.

Ophelia knows she loves her husband, but “love” is a word she never learned to say, a silence rooted in a childhood tragedy. What she doesn’t know is that Gianluca has been whispering it to someone else. And when his mistress crashes the party along with her own boyfriend, she brings a revelation that could unravel everything.

Across Rome, Paris and Ibiza, the party guests navigate the tangled paths that bring people together and push them apart, exploring where love begins, where it falters, and the courage it takes to hold on—or to let go.

Will There Be Love? is the sequel to Whitney Cubbison’s debut novel, Will There Be Wine?, however it can be read as a stand-alone.
