Interview with IVONNE HARLECH ~ author of ~MISTRESS OF THE TEMPLE ~

Mistress of the Temple

Based on a remarkable true story… 1290 BC in the Egyptian city of Abydos, the young priestess Bentreshy is renowned for her spiritual powers—a medium between Isis and the temple. But when she begins an illicit love affair with King Sety I, her spiritual life is thrown into turmoil. By defying temple protocol the pair pit themselves against the powerful priesthood…

3200 thousand years later, Dorothy Eady (aka Omm Sety) begins to remember a past life, when she lived in a beautiful temple as a follower of Isis. Only Dr Budge, a Keeper at the British Museum, believes her story and helps her unravel the past. Dorothy must return to Abydos where the truth lies hidden in the mysterious temple, revealing a past life that mirrors her own, where ancient secrets are about to change her destiny.

‘This is Dorothy Eady’s story. A woman who had her life once described in The New York Times as “one of the Western World’s most intriguing and convincing modern case histories of reincarnation”. After a fall down stairs at the age of three, where she was declared dead, she awoke as if having had a refreshing rest; full of health and asking to ‘go home’. Her home was no longer the London house of her birth, her memories of ancient Egypt had started. Or rather the memories of Bentreshy, a Temple of Isis priestess. Dorothy was now never destined to be the mother and wife her own family assumed for her.

Yvonne Harlech’s passion for this era leaps off the page at you and you find yourself absolutely absorbed. Feeling the desert sun burning your skin and just wishing you could be there at those feasts! It’s rare to come across a biographical novel that is so engrossing. It was such a good read that the images have remained. Thoroughly enjoyable, rich and satisfying; Mistress of the Temple has entered my top ten of favourite books and is unlikely to be removed.’
Rachel Malone, Historical Novel Review

Yvonne Harlech was born in Edinburgh and grew up in Montreal, Canada. She studied English Literature at Concordia University and now lives in Cheshire with her husband. She is the author of the historical novels Mistress of the Temple and Harp of Joy, set in ancient Egypt. The novels reflect her deep love for ancient Egypt, its dramatic history and rich heritage. The author is currently writing a novel about Romano-Britain, where great myths meet and cultures collide.

What is your book about?

It’s about a young girl who falls down the stairs and begins to remember a past life in ancient Egypt, and her journey to discover the past. Written as a time-slip it also follows the life of Bentreshy, a priestess in 1290 BC and her love affair with the pharaoh, King Sety I. Their lives are inextricably linked through time.

What inspired you to write this story?

I read about the life of Omm Sety, who had vivid memories of life in ancient Abydos and being the soul mate of King Sety I. I realised it was one of the world’s great love stories, a love that would never die, spanning three thousand years. I wanted to know more about Bentreshy and King Sety, and so I wrote their story as a novel.

Describe your writing in 3 words:

Magical, romantic, dramatic.

Do you have specific techniques to develop plot?

I write a detailed outline with a short chapter by chapter synopsis. But this often changes as I go along and the story takes on a life of its own. Sometimes I rein it in, other times I let it flow. The process is organic.

Are characters based on anyone you know?

The heroine is based on a real person, Dorothy Eady. But the fictional characters are all based on people I have met throughout my life…I often draw on real characters I have met as they feel more authentic to me. Sometimes I see someone in a restaurant and think, ‘yes–he is one of my characters!’ and then I discreetly take notes.

Was there any research?

I read many books on ancient Egypt, also on the Edwardian period up to the 1930’s. The ancient Egyptian part involved the most research: how they worshipped in the temples, about Isis and Osiris. I did a lot of research about the clothes, the food, how they lived and loved in ancient times.

What authors inspire or influence your work?

I loved historical fiction as a child, fantasy too. I love Mary Renault, Mary Stewart, Sarah Dunant, Charles Dickens. I think all these writers have influenced my work.

The inspiration? My mum has inspired me as she wrote children’s stories when I was growing up and always encouraged me to write.

Do you need visual media to describe people or places?

I am a great believer in visiting the places I am writing about to get the atmosphere first hand. I visited Abydos several times and wrote inside the temple, wandering around the columns, describing how I felt, what I saw. I like to use a collage board and collect images and objects that represent what I’m writing about. The characters come from every where, even someone I see in the street.

Favourite snack?

I always have a cup of tea on my desk and a packet of nuts, I’m a real little squirrel!

Do you have a Muse?

My main character actually becomes my Muse. She nudges me now and again, ‘come on, get me out of this place, I want to get home!’ That sort of thing.

Once a character is fully developed do you set them free or do they still dance around your mind?

I believe once a novel is written it belongs to the world, so yes, I set the character free. But they still inhabit my mind, until I get started on another project, then there isn’t enough room for old characters.

Is the Thesaurus one of your best writing friends?

I love the Thesaurus. Sometimes a word is on the tip of my tongue and the Thesaurus helps me find it. And if I feel I have used a word too often, I have a quick check. I use the online version and have it open while I write.

Who gets to read your drafts?

My husband is quite good at reading first drafts. I also have a good friend who is a poet and book editor. She reads everything before it goes to the publishers as I trust her honest feedback.

What is your biggest hurdle in the writing process?

Getting that first chapter written so that it runs smoothly. Once that is done the rest seems to flow.

What is your biggest marketing hurdle?

When I first started, I had no idea how to promote myself. It takes time out of writing and takes up so much time. I am not a fan of self-promotion. I prefer to write. But I have learned a lot in the last year: how to network with writers, bloggers and reviewers; the importance of using social media and having a website.

What projects are you working on now?

I am writing a novel set in ancient Rome and Britannia. I feel very excited about starting something completely different.

Is there anything you’d like to say to your readers?

Thank you for all your support, positive feedback. I love to hear from you all. The follow up, Harp of Joy will be out on kindle soon. You can find my book on:

Excerpt One:

Commander of the Queen’s Guard Eric DeStroia tortured the raven–haired courtesan lying beneath him—a surging thrust in, a prolonged, exquisite slide out. With a husky laugh, he hung her on the edge of climax for endless minutes. Eric reveled in her helplessness as he reduced her to abject begging. He enjoyed their “games”. Who would break first?
Her control finally crashed, swept up by the tsunami of pleasure he created.
"Please, by all the Gods, Eric, please. Let me come. I can't take any more."
Smiling wickedly, he rolled them over, letting her ride. "Take your pleasure."
He clasped her hips and thrust into her deeply. His strong fingers dented her generous buttocks where he held her spiked on his steel-hard cock.
Inhaling deeply with a low groan, she could not disguise her hunger, her impatience. “Shall I take you with me, lover?”
“Think you can?” He grunted in amusement and shook his head. “You are too greedy, wench. You can’t wait.”
Grinding her clit along his pubic bone, she managed several long rolls, the inner flesh of her slick vagina massaging his cock with each undulation. With a groan of effort, he slammed up and held her impaled as his hips circled. Her eyes flared as the surge of pressure against her most sensitive parts swept away her dubious control. Writhing, impaled on his rigid cock, she cried out at the spectacular gratification of a long withheld orgasm. Her inner core contracted violently around him. She came forever. He choked on a grunt and finished. She barely noticed.
“Arrogant, hateful man,” she muttered, her face buried against his chest. “You might at least pretend to let me win.”
“I never pretend.”
Limp, she sprawled across his muscled chest, tracing patterns with a manicured nail. “The rumor is you plan to take a squadron of the Queen’s Guard to bring back DeLorion’s sister from the Oshtesh.”
She rolled off his chest, slowly disentangling their sweaty, delicate parts and lay on her back, trying to regain her breath. She rolled to her side, petting his broad chest. “Perhaps your arranged bride will look the other way if you are discreet.”
“No. When—if—I marry, I will be faithful. I watched my father kill my mother’s soul with his philandering. I respect women too greatly to imitate his ways.” He struggled with his anger. “You are a favorite among the courtesans,” Eric said. “Your bed won’t be cold.”
With a small moue of disappointment, she reached out a forefinger and ran it gently up his semi-hard length glistening with their combined fluids. While his heart remained indifferent to her charms, she could definitely affect a lower organ. She caught her lip between her teeth, delighted when his cock twitched in response.
“But none like you.” She flashed him a coquettish look and arranged the sheets to cover her small breasts. “You are an outrageously beautiful man, Commander DeStroia, with an extraordinary talent for sex. My body will miss you.”
Eric grunted. “I note you don’t mention your heart. Come here to me, hussy.”
He shifted to gather her into his arms, nestling her head across his chest, moving her slender thigh to rest between his. His hands wandered down her body, stroking muscles that were tight and firm, skin that felt like satin. The flesh of her small breast filled his hand. He caught the hard bud of her nipple and rolled it between his thumb and middle finger. He laughed softly at her moan of appreciation and moved over her, kneeing her legs apart and entering her already wet pussy with a gentle glide.
“Please yourself, lover. I don’t think I can come again.”
“Hmmm, you can’t?” A wicked smile quirked the corner of his mouth. He kissed her lips, nipping gently. “You know ‘can’t’ is not permitted,” he whispered against her mouth. His eyes narrowed. “I give you my promise. You will.”

EXCERPT
I run through some paperwork when I hear someone clear their throat to get my attention. I look up
angrily to see the man who crashed into me this morning. It’s the idiot who enhanced my bad day.
“Jeni, I presume?” he asks with a quirky smile on his face, which is unexpectedly attractive.
I sit in silence as I stare at him with my mouth slightly open in surprise.
He speaks again. “I’m sorry about this morning. I see you managed to get that stain mostly out of your top. I’d like to pay for some new clothes and the damages to your car, if you’ll let me.”
I squirm in my seat as the attractiveness of this man is suddenly apparent. How did I not notice his gorgeousness this morning? He’s, quite frankly, one of the most attractive guys I’ve ever seen. In spite of his outrageously good looks and cheerful persona, I start to get angry with him all over again.
“No, you don’t need to pay for new clothes or for my car. My manager has told me that they will fix it for me and then charge the insurance company. So, like I said this morning, I don’t want or need your charity, thanks.”
He looks at me in surprise. “That’s no way to talk to a customer.” Again with a mischievous grin.
“Urgh.” I want to slap him in his smart-ass, gorgeous face.
“Sorry,” I say with extreme sarcasm. “Can I have the details of your car please, Mr. O’Connell?”
“If you won’t let me buy you some new clothes or fix your car, how about lunch then?”
There’s that grin again. I quickly gather myself together and reply hastily.
“It’s after two, Mr. O’Connell. I’ve had lunch, thanks.” I’m feeling quite pleased with myself as I stand up. “Now, if you wouldn’t mind, the details of your car?”
He looks at me puzzled.
“I didn’t mean today. I meant tomorrow or the next day or the weekend. Whenever you’re free?”
With that, his gorgeous smile crosses his face again, and I begin to melt. Is it hot in here? I can feel my cheeks burning. I look down, pretending to sort out paperwork on my desk so he can’t see the redness spreading across my face.
“I don’t think I can do lunch. I’m pretty busy you know.”
He looks like he’s thinking hard about what to say next and he tilts his head slightly.
“Dinner then?”
I let out a little laugh but quickly gather myself together.
“I could use the details of your car, Mr. O’Connell?”
He grins again.
“Jeez, you’re a tough one to crack, Jeni.”
I try not to smile.
“Okay, how about this? If you give me the pleasure of having dinner with you on Friday night, I’ll give you the details of my car.” He looks very pleased with himself, grinning from ear to ear.
I sigh, considering his deal.
“Oh, um, I don’t know. I mean you’re a customer. Surely there is some sort of rules about customers and employees dating.”
He laughs; the sound is delightful to my ears.
“I won’t tell if you don’t.”
I stand there in shock, contemplating what to say next. I mean could this amazingly handsome man want to take me out to dinner? Really? I’m not anything like the type of girl I’d imagine he would be into. I try to think of some witty comeback, but before I know what’s happening, I sputter, “Fine! Friday for dinner, if it’ll get you to co-operate. Please tell me the details of your car.”
I take a deep breath and wait for him to reply.
“Great, Friday it is. I have your details from this morning. I’ll call you with the restaurant and time.”
I sit back down on my chair in a dazed shock.
“Is that okay with you?”
I shake my head with disbelief.
“Sure, why not?” is all I can mange.
His smile reappears like he has overcome a huge obstacle and triumphed

~*~ THE HOUSE ~*~ by Sebastiana Randone

THE FAIRY TALES AND PORTALS.   Sebastiana Randone

The conception of my novel, The House, arrived one day whilst reflecting on the magic portals in children’s fairytales; the looking glass, the wardrobe, trees, rabbit holes etc.

I ventured to consider these magical entrances as archetypal time travel entry points, and as I was embarking on an adult fairy tale, the inclusion of these interesting ‘escape routes’ enabled a fascinating journey of (self) discovery for my main character.

Propelling the narrative was that these gateways into parallel worlds would present themselves as a timely escape from tribulation. By conveying her on a pathway back to times that she, the idealist, had often fantasised about, set up a plot that asked the question – was she so obsessed with the past, because there was something in her that was seeking resolution from a former life?

Thematically, this book is as much about ‘past-life’ entanglements, as it is about discontentment with existing in a world that fails to meet ones expectations, whether through love, aesthetics, spirituality etc. It is about escapism, a comforting scheme that, since the beginning of the modern era and due largely to the ingenuity and creativity of humankind, has been accessible to all through books and art.

THE HOUSE – SEBASTIANA RANDONE

The House is an adult fairy tale, time travel romance mystery.
Clad only in a torn night dress, a woman finds herself, late one afternoon, in an ancient forest. How she arrived there remains a mystery, both to her and the reader. Finally a frightful looking house arrives in view. Night is moving in and faced with the prospect of remaining in a wood, where only wolves and predators revel, she reluctantly seeks refuge in this unwelcoming house.
Once inside, and taken aback by a most unexpected interior, she soon discovers a room where a magic portal laying in wait transports her to a Georgian estate.  A baleful altercation with a beastly, drunkard Lord of the estate (archetype to the evil wolf in traditional tales) sets the tone for this narrative. Unable to find an escape route, she remains confined in this somber historical setting for many months, interacting with a curiously dysfunctional household.
Finally she finds her way back to the enigmatic house from which a journey to Regency London follows, where she meets with an interesting cast of individuals. Although it soon emerges that there is a relationship between the characters from both periods, the mystery surrounding her presence continues to confound all.
One foggy eve, a down cast man arrives and is introduced to the time traveller. When their eyes meet, an inexplicable sense of familiarity is felt by both. Returning home after a large stretch in Florence, the poet is instantly taken with this mysterious beauty, a meeting of which promises restoration for the heart broken man. Frustratingly however, there are obstacles hindering this unusual love match.  Soon a past life connection emerges, and by the last pages, many pieces of the puzzle form a startling picture. Upon the final curtain, the biggest surprise of all is revealed. With a conclusion, that, although bizarre is positive, like all good fairy tales.

Sebastiana Randone lives in Melbourne, Australia, and is from a dance background.

From an early age, Sebastiana developed a passion for reading, and from that moment has never been without a book.

The desire to write ‘one day’ had been pursuing for a long while. Finally that goal was realised with the debut release of “The House”; an adult fairy tale set in the Regency era.

ALEC HAWKES ~~~~ If Brains Were Dynamite ~~~~

FIVE STARS ***** First of all let me say that "If Brains Were Dynamite" is very well written (which I don't believe I've said about any other book I've ever reviewed) and was a pure pleasure to read. As a political satire, this book has been long overdue, and Hawkes' take on the political scene in the UK can be played out in virtually every other country in the world that adheres to 'democratic' principles. Interspersed with laughter over the bizarre antics of those involved, I found myself nodding along in agreement to the more telling points the author made, and saying "Damn right!" to myself, again and again.
To write a satire, I think first of all you have to be angry and fed up, and I think that came through rather well in this book, even though so much of it was couched in rib-tickling humour. But the anger isn't just a mindless rant - it bleeds to the surface and makes you realize that, in spite of all the tongue-in-cheek, this is a very serious book, and very intelligently written indeed! Bravo, Mr. Hawkes! No problem getting five stars from me!

C. W. Lovatt - author of "The Adventures of Charlie Smithers"

Image of Alec HawkesMy name is Alec Hawkes, an English chap with a rather good sense of humour. I am in my early 50's, and have had no formal training whatsoever in how to write. That is, of course, since my school days. However, I love to read and I love to write. My writing style is all mine. My day job is a night job, for I am part of a nearly extinct species, the dear old milkman, unique - I do believe - to Britain. Please correct me if I am wrong. I have a deep affection for comedy, irony, satire, and anything that raises a chuckle or deep belly laugh, or even merely an eyebrow. My own books - two so far, with more to come - are satirical swipes at the political and banking systems in Britain. I am told that many a chuckle and raised eyebrow come from reading my books. My third, which I am working on now, will have a more international feel as I have a 'pop' at many more politicians. All in fun, of course, though with a serious underlying message for the buggers to TELL THE TRUTH!
