Guest post on WHAT INSPIRES THE author of "The Last Omen: Possessed" Steven Nedelton ~ presented by A.B. Tours
My interests are in the action, general
thriller genre. Up till now, my books were based on the news events in the
past. I would read newspapers, the associated history and get ideas for books.
Some of the inspiration came from the previously read top sellers too, but, in
general, it was the form of their content rather than the content itself that
guided me. What I usually search for are
a few interesting tidbits, not the main incident itself. The central item is
often already taken by other writers who were alerted much earlier by their
journalist friends (as usual, it’s still ‘who you know’). As an example, my
book ‘Dance of Shadows’ was based on the paranormal powers used in the USSSR
and US espionage. Several books were already published based on this central
idea—Including several secret yet now known such incidents. I did quite a bit
of searching on my own and came up with a completely different story. The book
took five years of writing and research.
I am still involved in searching
the Internet for the top stories that might provide me with that spark that
lights up my imagination and starts me working on that ‘new project.’
This occult suspense story is about a possessed woman, a journalist/author trapped by her demon and a soldier of fortune hunting untouchables. The journalist/author, C. Adams, inherits a fortune from his uncle. He is pursuing a successful business woman when he discovers that she is possessed by a demon. She warns him, but the demon turns vicious and the journalist is exposed to blood-freezing occult encounters. In a parallel narrative, a foreign soldier, married to a New York City nurse, and desperately looking for employment in the New York City, turns to bounty hunting the most dangerous untouchables. At one point, the paths of the two men cross. Detective Richter is trying to unscramble the puzzle, but cannot control the events. What happens next, when demons possess the naïve—is up to the reader to discover.
The partly true-life thriller tale contains horror settings, unrelenting action and true demon encounters. If you never believed in the paranormal, you will after reading this entertaining book.
Steven Nedelton writes suspenseful novels in crime, mystery and paranormal genres. “Paul seemed pretty excited about that ad campaign,” Emily
said after a moment of silence.
Mitch glanced at her and nodded. “Advertising is his passion.”
“What?” she asked.
“His passion,” Mitch repeated. “You know the thing he loves.”
Emily cocked her head and gave him a smile. “I thought Rachel was his passion.”
Mitch laughed. “Well,
yeah, that’s a given. But advertising is
also a passion. It gets his juices
flowing. He loves it. You can tell.
I believe everyone has at least one passion. It may not always be a healthy one, but
everyone has to have something that drives them.”
“What do you mean?”
“Take Steven, for example,” he said to her. Emily looked over at his brother. “You know him pretty well. What do you think is the most important thing
to him?”
“Anna,” she said promptly.
“Well, and Mia. And your parents,
you, and Tori.” She stopped and
laughed. “I guess that’s more than one
thing.”
“No. You got it
right. It’s family. Steven has always been a family guy. Has always wanted to be with his family, in
his hometown. That’s his passion.”
“Hmm,” Emily said thinking.
“Do you have a passion?”
“Sure, I have three.”
“Three? What are
they?”
He shot her a sly look.
“You tell me yours, and I’ll tell you mine.”
He hadn’t expected the sad look that crossed her face. She didn’t respond. He reached for her hand and squeezed. “Hey, what’s wrong?”
“I don’t think I have a passion,” she whispered.
“Sure, you do.” She
shook her head so he continued. “You’re
passionate about computers.”
She thought about it for a minute. “Not really.
I mean I like working with them.
I enjoy teaching about them, but I don’t think I can call it a
passion.” She paused. “I really don’t have a passion.”
“Well, then, I guess we will have to find you one.”

It felt like a movie: the extras standing in the background, overacting their sense of excitement, or sorrow, or terror; the sound seeming to distort, as though the editors wanted the shot to drown out the world, make the audience focus on what just happened, to give them the sense of how important and terrible what they just saw was. There was blood, too, and not the cheap stuff they get for bad indie films, but the kind that looks real as it spreads through the victim’s clothing like a cancer, then falls with the body. The victim, bless his role, should get an award for his performance—bags dropped to the ground, chest and shoulders shuddering from the impact as he fell with a gasp and nothing more. The shooter should at least be nominated for something, his face cold enough to cut himself from the scene, as though he could see it all unfold as a bystander. Maybe he’s the director. If so, he knows exactly what he’s doing—no ad-libbing. The victim falls, and the boys in the editing room know exactly how to work slow-motion, milk it. They really want the audience to see him fall, his head smacking the pavement, and the red wine in one of his bags falling out and cracking open and mixing with the blood around his head and that spilling from his chest (they’ll call it a symbol for a halo). The audience will cringe, maybe shriek, but after the climax, the falling resolution will leave them feeling satisfied, like that was bound to happen. Peaceful. Because a movie isn’t real. Even those “based on real events” aren’t really real. It’s just a bunch of actors, sets, props, directions—but none of it’s real.Daniel swayed back and forth, gun trembling in his hands. He wished it was a movie. In the movies, it always works out for the good guy. Right? Wasn’t he the good guy? Wasn’t he? It sure wasn’t Jackson. Jackson’s dead.
Dead.
Really dead. Not like the movies.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Born on October 14, 1993, Dan Otsuki grew up an only child. As his early life found him a good thirty minutes or more away from kindergarten and preschool friends, Dan found solace in action figures and Legos, making up his own narrative of their lives and adventures. Starting in high school, and inspired by authors like Stephen King and media like The Twilight Zone, the Mass Effect video game series, and a plethora of horror films, Dan began to pursue his passion for writing. Since attending the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington—where Dan currently lives as he works on his undergraduate degree—Dan has found a passion for religious studies in addition to English and creative writing. He currently works at Diversions Cafe on the Puget Sound campus, and spends much of his free time engrossed with all kinds of movies with his close friends.
